Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Remarks
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
Wilson's reaction came after Payton made remarks following Denver's historic comeback win over the New York. Payton remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship
- The quarterback joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M extension.
- The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
- Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious split between the quarterback and his mentor.
